Dozens of ships at anchor filmed from a low-flying plane, shared as oil tankers stuck in the Strait of Hormuz: real or AI?

MISLEADING

The video is real. It shows ships near Chittagong in Bangladesh, not the Strait of Hormuz.

How sure we areVery high

Based on 1 strong and 3 supporting pieces of evidence.

What we found

The 54-second video shows dozens of ships at anchor in muddy water, filmed from the window of a low-flying plane. An X account posted it on 11 October 2026 claiming it showed oil tankers stuck in the Strait of Hormuz. The footage is real, but it was filmed in Bangladesh. A watermark led Lead Stories to an Instagram user who posted the clip with no caption on 3 October 2026. Lead Stories matched the coastline and a bend in a river to the area around Shah Amanat Airport in Chittagong, less than five miles from Chittagong Port, where large groups of anchored ships are common. A Community Note on the post linked to older checks about a different Bangladesh video. When a clip is used as proof of a news story, check where it was filmed: real footage from one place is often reused for another.

Weak Shown, not relied on

How it looksThere is nothing fake about the footage itself: the ships, the muddy water and the coastline below all match a real place. What is wrong is the caption. The plane is flying low because it is close to an airport, which is a clue to where it was filmed.

Detector scores are often wrong, so they never decide a verdict here.

What we couldn’t establish

The exact date of filming; the port and the poster had not replied to Lead Stories. If you know more, tell us.

Bottom line

Real footage of ships near Chittagong, Bangladesh, with a false Strait of Hormuz caption.
